by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 76.147

athāprameyasya pitur abhūṣi cirasya dṛṣṭvāna priyaṃ manāpaṃ |
putraṃ svakaṃ prāṇasamaṃ niṣaṇṇaṃ hitāhitaṃ pṛcchati vegajāto || 147 ||

Then the father of the Infinite One fell to thinking, as, after a long time, he beheld seated there his gracious son who was dear to him as life itself. Impulsively he inquired whether it was well or ill with him. (147)
