Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. शुक्तान्यम्लानि तिक्तानि कषायकटुकानि च ।
नास्वादयीत भुञ्जानो रसांश्च मधुरांस्तथा ।
यात्रामात्रं च भुञ्जीत केवलं प्राणयात्रिकम् ॥ २९ ॥

nāsvādayīta bhuñjāno rasāṃśca madhurāṃstathā |
