Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.241

अन्ये रथेहि पते मेदिनीयं गर्जन्त मेघा यथ अन्तरीक्षे ।
यथ हस्तिनागा च महार्णवस्मिं तथैव सर्वा हत मारसैन्याः ॥ २४१ ॥

anye rathehi pate medinīyaṃ garjanta meghā yatha antarīkṣe |
yatha hastināgā ca mahārṇavasmiṃ tathaiva sarvā hata mārasainyāḥ || 241 ||

Some flew over the ground in their chariots, like clouds rumbling in the sky. Like elephants floundering in the sea, so were all Mara’s stricken hosts. (241)
