Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 8.16

अस्माभिः रक्षितव्य एष हि जगतो ऽर्थं अतितेजस्वी ।
चिनोति शुभं शुभकरो इदम् आश्चर्यं तदा भवति ॥ १६ ॥

asmābhiḥ rakṣitavya eṣa hi jagato 'rthaṃ atitejasvī |
cinoti śubhaṃ śubhakaro idam āścaryaṃ tadā bhavati || 16 ||

We must cherish him, for, surpassing in might, and being a creator of bliss, he lays up a store of bliss for the sake of the world.” This is the marvel that then comes to pass. (16)
