This page relates ‘Works of Lakshmana Surin’ of the study on the Bhagavatpadabhyudaya by Lakshmana Suri: a renowned Sanskrit Scholar from the 19th century. The Bhagavatpada-abhyudaya is a Mahakavya (epic poem) narrating the life of Shankara-Acharya, a prominent teacher of Advaita Vedanta philosophy. This essay investigates the socio-spiritual conditions of 8th century AD in ancient India as reflected in Lakshmanasuri’s work.

He has written two mahākāvyās namely Bhagavatpādābhyudayam and Kṛṣṇalīlāmṛta. The Laghu Kāvyas written by him, seven in number. They are: Viprasandeśa Mānasasandeśa, Veṃkaṭeśa stava, Gurustavamāla, Karunaka-an Elegy, Prapanna-Vibhīṣaṇa and George-Deva-Śataka. The Sanskrit Prose fiction is written by Lakṣmaṇa Sūrin are the following: Bhārata saṅgraha, Rāmāyaṇa saṅgraha, Nalopākhyāna saṅgraha and Bhīṣmavijaya. Lakṣmaṇa Sūrin wrote three dramas. They are Delhi sāmrājya, Paulastya vadha and Ghoṣayātra. Kārikās on the Daśopaniṣads is a Philosophical work done by him. He wrote seven commentaries on various Sanskrit text of kāvya and nāṭaka such as On Anargharāghava, On Uttararāmacarita, On Mahāvīracarita, On Bālarāmāyaṇa, On Veṇīsaṃhāra, On Ratnāvali and On Pārijā tamañjari of Maṇḍana. Among them except Bhagavatpādābhyudaya and Bhāratasaṃgraha, other works are not available.

Bhāratasaṃgraha is published in 1956. His prose style was very simple at the same time vigorous and grammatical. The Board of Studies in Sanskrit of the Madras University prescribed this work for the Matriculation Examination. This book begins with the prise of Viṣṇu. The author concise the stories of Mahābhārata in this book. The main intension of Laṃṣmaṇa Sūrin was to familiarise the epic stories of India to common people. It is a miniature form of Mahābhārata. There are 19 parvas, Bhagavatdaṇḍakam attached to it. He do not tell about Bhagavatgīta. There is only a casual reference to it. He has managed to shorten the descriptions of Mahābhārata in a beautiful manner.

Lakṣmaṇa Sūrin lived in the Renaissance period. He tried to spread the ideas of the greatness of Indian heritage and culture during the Renaissance through his writings. Bhagavatpādābhyudaya played a very prominent role to remind the society about Śaṅkara and his call for unity. He used simple Sanskrit language in his work. That was helpful to create a new awakening in Sanskrit studies at that time.
