Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 90.87

ācchetva tṛṣṇāṃ guṇasaṃpracārī bahv atra raktā kariṣyanti cchandaṃ |
bahuṃ vatāyaṃ janatāṃ suvedha ācchetva + + + + + + mṛtyurājño |
nayiṣyati acyutapadam aśokaṃ || 87 ||

He who fares on with his groups and orders has cut off all craving. And many beings will make a resolve. Yea, he will surely pluck many men from the clutches of the king of death, and lead them to the sphere of the immovable and the griefless. (87)
