Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 29.16

yānīha bhūtāni samāgatāni bhūmyāni vā yāni va antarīkṣe |
maitrīkarontu sada manuṣyakā prajā divaṃ cā rātriṃ ca haranti vo baliṃ |
tasmād dhi taṃ rakṣatha apramattā mātā va putraṃ anukampamānā |
etena satyena susvasti bhotu manuṣyato vā amanuṣyato vā || 16 ||

All demons that are here assembled, those of earth and those of air, let them always deal kindly with the race of men. Day and night they bring you offerings. Therefore keep diligent watch over this man, as a mother shows anxious care for her child. By this truth let blessing come from man and from demon. (16)
