This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 10.16

परिदेवितकंपनेषु अनिष्टसंयोगप्रियहीनेषु ।
उषितं नरकेषु वरं न च कुपुरुषसंश्रयनिकेतः ॥ १६ ॥

paridevitakaṃpaneṣu aniṣṭasaṃyogapriyahīneṣu |
uṣitaṃ narakeṣu varaṃ na ca kupuruṣasaṃśrayaniketaḥ || 16 ||

“It is better to dwell in the hells that throb with lamentations where one meets people one wishes far away, and is separated from the people one loves, than in the society of wicked men” (16)
