The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

क्रमेणानेन जातीनां विविधा भेदकल्पना ।
तासां तामसतामस्यां जातौ जातोऽसि मानद ॥ २३ ॥

krameṇānena jātīnāṃ vividhā bhedakalpanā |
tāsāṃ tāmasatāmasyāṃ jātau jāto'si mānada || 23 ||

In this manner have these philosophers classed the emanated soul of beings into many grades and species; among which O my respected sir, your soul is reckoned among the vilest of the vile tamasa tamasi.
