The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 7.82.9

विना तिष्ठति माधुर्यं कथयेक्षुरसः कथम् ।
निर्माधुर्यश्च यस्त्विक्षुरसो न हि स तद्रसः ॥ ९ ॥

vinā tiṣṭhati mādhuryaṃ kathayekṣurasaḥ katham |
nirmādhuryaśca yastvikṣuraso na hi sa tadrasaḥ || 9 ||

Say what is the extract of the sugar-cane, unless it is possessed of its sweetness; you can not call it the juice of sugar-cane, unless you find the saccharine flavour in the same.
