Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

या नापश्यच्चन्द्रमा नैव सूर्यो रामाः कदाचिदपि तस्मिन्नरेन्द्रे ।
महावनं गच्छति कौरवेन्द्रे शोकेनार्ता राजमार्गं प्रपेदुः ॥ १३ ॥
