The Buddha Carita (Saddharma-pundarika) by Asvaghosa a famous Sanskrit text revolving around the live and exploits of the Buddha. The Buddha Carita (Buddhacarita) is written in the style of a Kavya (or Mahakavya, epic poetry) and extant original Sanskrit text consists of roughly 1,000 metrical verses.

Verse 6.10

कुलार्थं धार्यते पुत्रः पोषार्थं सेव्यते पिता ।
आशयाश्लिष्यति जगन्नास्ति निष्कारणास्वता ॥ १० ॥

kulārthaṃ dhāryate putraḥ poṣārthaṃ sevyate pitā |
āśayāśliṣyati jagannāsti niṣkāraṇāsvatā || 10 ||

'The son is maintained for the sake of the family, the father is honoured for the sake of our own (future) support; the world shows kindness for the sake of hope; there is no such a thing as unselfishness without a motive.
