Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 97.5

सत्कृत असत्कृता वा आयुर् विज्ञानं उष्मगता व ।
कस्य जनेति प्रीतिर् धरणिरजसमे मृतशरीरे ॥ ५ ॥

satkṛta asatkṛtā vā āyur vijñānaṃ uṣmagatā va |
kasya janeti prītir dharaṇirajasame mṛtaśarīre || 5 ||

Whether honoured or unhonoured, life and consciousness pass away like vapour. Who can find pleasure in a dead body that is but dust of the earth? (5)
