This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 49.54

यदि न मरणं नो जातं स्यान् न रोगजरादयः ।
यदि च न भवेद् इष्टत्यागो न चाप्रियसंश्रयो ॥ ५४ ॥

yadi na maraṇaṃ no jātaṃ syān na rogajarādayaḥ |
yadi ca na bhaved iṣṭatyāgo na cāpriyasaṃśrayo || 54 ||

“If there were for us no death, no birth, no disease and old age and such things; if one had not to renounce what is desirable; if one had not to have recourse to what is unpleasant;... (54)
