This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 26.53

बहूहि प्राणेहि मही संवृता अणूहि स्थूलेहि च मध्येहि च ।
बुद्धो यदा गच्छति भूतसंस्तृते व्यथा ततो उपपद्यति आक्रमे ॥ ५३ ॥

bahūhi prāṇehi mahī saṃvṛtā aṇūhi sthūlehi ca madhyehi ca |
buddho yadā gacchati bhūtasaṃstṛte vyathā tato upapadyati ākrame || 53 ||

“The ground is covered with many creatures, small, large, and medium-sized. When the Buddha walks over these creatures lying on the ground, his tread will be the cause of suffering.” (53)
