The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 6.50.22

भ्रमत्येव जगज्जीवो वासनावलितश्चिरम् ।
ऊर्ध्वाधोगमनैरब्धौ काष्ठं वीचिहतं यथा ॥ २२ ॥

bhramatyeva jagajjīvo vāsanāvalitaściram |
ūrdhvādhogamanairabdhau kāṣṭhaṃ vīcihataṃ yathā || 22 ||

Thus the living soul wanders about in the world, as it is dragged to and fro by the halter of desire tied about its neck; now it soars high and then it plunges below like a plank, rising up and sinking below the waves and currents of the sea.
