This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 98.12

सो भिन्नयानपात्रो परिपूरति सागरे नरप्रवरो ।
आत्मं प्रियं परित्यजि परजनपरिमोचनार्थाय ॥ १२ ॥

so bhinnayānapātro paripūrati sāgare narapravaro |
ātmaṃ priyaṃ parityaji parajanaparimocanārthāya || 12 ||

“And he, the Best of Men, was shipwrecked, but he achieved his quest in the sea. For he sacrificed his own dear self for the sake of the deliverance of other men. (12)
