by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 97.8

न उत्सहामि पुरुषर्षभस्य प्रचर्तुं पापं धनकारणार्थं ।
यथाश्रवो तादृशं दर्शनन् ते सुदुष्करं क्रियति लोकपण्डित ॥ ८ ॥

na utsahāmi puruṣarṣabhasya pracartuṃ pāpaṃ dhanakāraṇārthaṃ |
yathāśravo tādṛśaṃ darśanan te suduṣkaraṃ kriyati lokapaṇḍita || 8 ||

I cannot do wrong to a valorous man for the sake of gain. As your fame was so do you prove to be. ’Tis a doughty deed you do, O wise man of the world. (8)
