Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 74.2

हृष्टस्य कालो न हि शोचितस्य रमितस्य कालो अरतिं जहाहि ।
शृणोहि संगीतिम् इवाप्सराणां हृष्टाननो अस्मिं मनुष्यनन्दने ॥ २ ॥

hṛṣṭasya kālo na hi śocitasya ramitasya kālo aratiṃ jahāhi |
śṛṇohi saṃgītim ivāpsarāṇāṃ hṛṣṭānano asmiṃ manuṣyanandane || 2 ||

This is a time for gladness, not for sorrow. It is a time for delight; so do not breed discontent. Hark to the chorus that is like to a chorus of the Apsarases, and be glad with this rejoicing throng of men. (2)
