Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 35.26

himavatamūle adarśi nagaraṃ ramyaṃ ādityabandhuguptaṃ |
durdharṣaṃ paraśatrubhiḥ taṃ ca suramaṇīyaṃ tridaśāna iva |
devānāṃ praviśe ṛṣi puraṃ śākiyadarśanārthāye || 26 ||

At the foot of the Himalayas he descried a delightful city bathed in sunlight, and impregnable to foes. Verily it was as delightful as a city of the Three-and-Thirty devas. And the seer entered this city in order to see the Shakyan. (26)
