Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 34.50

तेषाम् अनन्तरं द्विजिह्वगणा आरक्षहेतु दिशतासु स्थिता ।
वातं पि येष चलितं श्रुणिय क्रोधा समुत्पतन्ति अग्निसमा ॥ ५० ॥

teṣām anantaraṃ dvijihvagaṇā ārakṣahetu diśatāsu sthitā |
vātaṃ pi yeṣa calitaṃ śruṇiya krodhā samutpatanti agnisamā || 50 ||

Next to these the horde of fork-tongued Nagas, whose anger is stirred to flame by the slightest breeze they hear stirring, stood on guard in the regions of the sky. (50)
