Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 19.6

परलोको तथा नास्ति दानफलं क्वचिद् यत्र ।
वीतरागो वीतदोषो वीतमोहो न विद्यते ॥ ६ ॥

paraloko tathā nāsti dānaphalaṃ kvacid yatra |
vītarāgo vītadoṣo vītamoho na vidyate || 6 ||

As there is no world beyond, there is no reward for charity anywhere. There is none to be found who is rid of passion, hatred and folly. (6)
