This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 18.103

लोके जाता नरश्रेष्ठा न च लोकेन लिप्यथ ।
प्रज्ञप्तिसमतिक्रान्ता गम्भीरविषया विभूः ॥ १०३ ॥

loke jātā naraśreṣṭhā na ca lokena lipyatha |
prajñaptisamatikrāntā gambhīraviṣayā vibhūḥ || 103 ||

The best of men, though born into the world, are not besmirched by it. The lords, profound in their attributes, are beyond description. (103)
