The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 4.53.29

स्वयैव दुःखदायिन्या चेष्टया परिरोदिति ।
काष्ठावष्टब्धवृषणः कीलोत्पाटी कपिर्यथा ॥ २९ ॥

svayaiva duḥkhadāyinyā ceṣṭayā pariroditi |
kāṣṭhāvaṣṭabdhavṛṣaṇaḥ kīlotpāṭī kapiryathā || 29 ||

It is by one's own attempt in this way, that he exposes himself to the miseries of the world; and then he wails at his fate like the foolish monkey, that brought on its own destruction, by pulling out the peg from the chink of the timber.
