Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. ऐन्द्रीं तु दिशमास्थाय शैलराजस्य धीमतः ।
विविक्ते पर्वततटे पाराशर्यो महातपाः ।
वेदानध्यापयामास व्यासः शिष्यान्महातपाः ॥ २३ ॥

aindrīṃ tu diśamāsthāya śailarājasya dhīmataḥ |
vivikte parvatataṭe pārāśaryo mahātapāḥ |
vedānadhyāpayāmāsa vyāsaḥ śiṣyānmahātapāḥ || 23 ||
