Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 42.9

यो जायते सो भवते सुशीलो सुसंयतो सुव्रतो ऋजुभूतः ।
अध्यापको भोति समाप्तपादः तस्मा हि अस्माद् दहरो न मृय्यति ॥ ९ ॥

yo jāyate so bhavate suśīlo susaṃyato suvrato ṛjubhūtaḥ |
adhyāpako bhoti samāptapādaḥ tasmā hi asmād daharo na mṛyyati || 9 ||

Everyone of us who is born becomes virtuous, self-controlled, devout and pious; he becomes learned and perfect in his knowledge of the verses. Therefore it is that none of us dies young. (9)
