by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 17.89

निष्क्रम्य नगरवरातो अवलोकयि पुरवरं पुरुषसिंहो ।
न तं पुनर् अहं प्रवेक्ष्यम् अप्राप्य जरामरणपारम् इति ॥ ८९ ॥

niṣkramya nagaravarāto avalokayi puravaraṃ puruṣasiṃho |
na taṃ punar ahaṃ pravekṣyam aprāpya jarāmaraṇapāram iti || 89 ||

When he had withdrawn from the fair city, the lion-hearted man looked down on the goodly citadel, and said, “I shall not enter it again before I have passed beyond the power of old age and death.” (89)
