by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 11.28

ataḥ prabhṛti tad rūpaṃ agryaṃ sadevake loke |
ataḥ prabhṛti varṇo pi tejokīrtiyaśobalaṃ |
lokena viṣamaṃ bhavati bodhisatvānam uttamaṃ || 28 ||

Henceforth, the form of the Bodhisattvas is supreme in the world of men and devas, and unsurpassed are the lustre, the radiance, the fame and glory and might of the Bodhisattvas, and hard to attain by the world. (28)
