Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

सर्वानुपायानपि संप्रधार्य समुद्धरेत्स्वस्य कुलस्य तन्तुम् ।
ज्येष्ठो यवीयानपि यो द्विजस्य शुश्रूषवान्दानपरायणः स्यात् ॥ ६ ॥

sarvānupāyānapi saṃpradhārya samuddharetsvasya kulasya tantum |
jyeṣṭho yavīyānapi yo dvijasya śuśrūṣavāndānaparāyaṇaḥ syāt || 6 ||
