by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 91.33

अप्पेहि यस्य से भार्या अपुत्रे पुत्रं भाषसि ।
मानुषा न तुवं रक्षी न मां शक्ष्यसि खादितुं ॥ ३३ ॥

appehi yasya se bhāryā aputre putraṃ bhāṣasi |
mānuṣā na tuvaṃ rakṣī na māṃ śakṣyasi khādituṃ || 33 ||

“Deliver him to him whose wife you are, instead of saying he is the son of a childless man. You are not a human being. You are an ogress, though you cannot devour me.” (33)
