by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 78.2

तिर्यग्योनिगतस्यापि गजस्य स्वमातरे सौहृदम् आसि ।
किं पुनः मनुष्यभूतो गुरुं पुरिचरेय तं विप्रं ॥ २ ॥

tiryagyonigatasyāpi gajasya svamātare sauhṛdam āsi |
kiṃ punaḥ manuṣyabhūto guruṃ puricareya taṃ vipraṃ || 2 ||

Even when he was an elephant in the world of beasts he was kind to his mother. How much more should I celebrate him as a man, venerable and wise? (2)
