by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.620

प्रियवद्य दानं तथ अर्थचर्या समानार्थता च बहुजनस्य ।
अक्रुष्टवन्तो न जनेति रोषं यो अंगुलीहि नमे बुद्धस्तूपं ॥ ६२० ॥

priyavadya dānaṃ tatha arthacaryā samānārthatā ca bahujanasya |
akruṣṭavanto na janeti roṣaṃ yo aṃgulīhi name buddhastūpaṃ || 620 ||

He has affability, generosity, beneficence, and a sense of the common good of the people. He who shall reverently bow before a tope of the Conqueror does not shout out and give way to rage. (620)
