This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 40.3

सिंहा वाघ्रा मृगा चैव हस्तिनो वृषभा वृका ।
न शक्नुवन्ति अन्वेतुं गता प्रथमा पर्वतं ॥ ३ ॥

siṃhā vāghrā mṛgā caiva hastino vṛṣabhā vṛkā |
na śaknuvanti anvetuṃ gatā prathamā parvataṃ || 3 ||

Lions, tigers, deer, elephants, bulls and wolves failed to win the race and be the first to reach the mountain. (3)
