by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 39.1

चेष्टालीलासमाचारा निमित्तस्य च ग्राहणं ।
कौतूहालेन चपलास्त्रिभिर् आरज्यन्ति पार्थिव ॥ १ ॥

ceṣṭālīlāsamācārā nimittasya ca grāhaṇaṃ |
kautūhālena capalāstribhir ārajyanti pārthiva || 1 ||

Gesture, wanton behaviour, the excitement of sensuous attraction—by these three, O king, are fickle men stirred up. (1)
