by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 18.51

करोन्ति नाम आहारं न चैषां बाधते क्षुधा ।
जनताया उपदार्थं एषा लोकानुवर्तना ॥ ५१ ॥

karonti nāma āhāraṃ na caiṣāṃ bādhate kṣudhā |
janatāyā upadārthaṃ eṣā lokānuvartanā || 51 ||

It is true that they eat food, but hunger never distresses them. It is in order to provide men with the opportunity to give alms that in this respect they conform to the world. (51)
