Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 10.38

भूमि सन्धिषु अयं प्रवर्तते निश्चला नभसि नआत्र संशयः ।
तेषु सर्वशुभकर्मराशिनां तेजसा भ्रमति सर्वसंततं ॥ ३८ ॥

bhūmi sandhiṣu ayaṃ pravartate niścalā nabhasi naātra saṃśayaḥ |
teṣu sarvaśubhakarmarāśināṃ tejasā bhramati sarvasaṃtataṃ || 38 ||

This earth as a rule remains fixed on its foundations, immovable in space. This is beyond doubt. But now, through the power of these beings who have laid up a store of all good deeds, this earth trembles in all its wide extent. (38)
