by Dhrubajit Sarma | 2015 | 94,519 words

This page relates “Rasa (11): Vatsala or parental affection” as it appears in the case study regarding the Srikanthacarita and the Mankhakosa. The Shrikanthacarita was composed by Mankhaka, sometimes during A.D. 1136-1142. The Mankhakosa or the Anekarthakosa is a kosa text of homonymous words, composed by the same author.

Part 2k - Rasa (11): Vatsala or parental affection

Vatsala is accepted by Bharata and subsequently by Viśvanātha also, as the tenth rasa. The feeling of parental affection is the corresponding mood of this sentiment, while son and the like are the ālambanas. The actions, learning, heroic brilliance and compassion of them are the uddīpanas, whereas, embrace, touching of the body, kissing on the head, gazing, delight, tears etc. are the anubhāvas. Again, probable evil consequences, ecstasy, pride etc. are considered as the vyabhicāribhāvas.[1]

The Vātsalyarasa or Vatsala is found to be delineated in canto XXV, in the verses, viz. ārādhitā bhagavatī[2] ….., yatkāvyaratnamupadhātu[3] ….., tatsauṣṭhavavyasani[4] ….., dhanyastvaṃ viniveśitairbahutithai[5] ….., yacchrīmaṅkhaka[6] ….. and ārūḍhāṃ paripāka[7] …...
