Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

समन्तपञ्चकं नाम पुण्यं द्विजनिषेवितम् ।
गतवानस्मि तं देशं युद्धं यत्राभवत्पुरा ।
पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च सर्वेषां च महीक्षिताम् ॥ ११ ॥

samantapañcakaṃ nāma puṇyaṃ dvijaniṣevitam |
gatavānasmi taṃ deśaṃ yuddhaṃ yatrābhavatpurā |
