The Sanskrit edition of the Apastamba Sulba-sutra with the commentaries of Kapardin, Karavinda and Sundararaja. The Sulbasutras are considered Vedic appendices and deals with the ancient Indian science of Mathematics and Geometry, by instructing the construction of fire-altars, among others. yathāsaṅkhyam itarā vyavalikhya yathāyogam upadadhyāt || ĀpŚus_7.15 ||

mṛdo dehāniti pradarśanaṃ tasmin caturaśramityādeḥ /

aśmanavamā iti siddhe' pyekasyāḥ sthāna iti vacanaṃ dravyeṣṭakānāmavaṭeṣūpadhānasya jñāpanārtham /
vyaktamuktaṃ bodhāyanena /
lokabādhāni dravyāṇyavaṭeṣūpadheyāni /
yathāyogamupadadhyāt agnikalpe yāvatsaṅkhyākā dhiṣṇiyā āmnātāḥ tāvatsaṅraṣyākā vyavalikhya karaṇāni kṛtvā yathāyogaṃ yathā yujyate tatho padadhyāt //

tasminmaṇḍale yāvat pramāṇaṃ caturaśraṃ kartuṃ śakyaṃ tāvallikhet, evaṃ kṛte maṇḍalamadhye samacaturaśraṃ ekaṃ, tatpārśveṣu catvāri dhanurākārāṇi bhavanti, tāni pradhaya ityucyante /
pradhirnāma rathacakrāvayavaḥ /
pradhīyate pradhāvyate vāneneti pradhiḥ /

taccaturaśraṃ navadhā vibhajeta / tribhāgāvalekhanena navadhā vibhajya pradhiṃ tvekaikaṃ traidhaṃ vibhajet / caturaśraṃ naveṣṭakaṃ catvāraḥ pradhayaḥ tridhā vibhaktā dvādaśamācyaḥ ekaviṃśatiriṣṭakāḥ / maṇḍalamadhye caturaśrakaraṇo'yaṃ prayogaḥ / maṇḍalamadhye prācyudīcīṃ sampādya maṇḍalalekhāyāḥ parīṇāhaṃ caturdhā saṃbhujya saṃbhogeṣu tatra lakṣaṇāni kṛtvā lakṣaṇāllakṣaṇaṃ likhet / evaṃ kṛte maṇḍalamadhye caturaśraṃ bhavati / tatra viṣkambhārdhaṃ catuḥ pañcadaśāṅgulayor'dhadvāviṃśatitilāś ca madhyacaturaśrakaraṇī / (sapta) saptatiraṅgulayo'ṣṭatilāś ca tasyāsya tṛtīyo bhāgaḥ / pañcaviṃśatiraṅgulayaḥ pañcaviṃśatitilāś ca karaṇāni kuryata, tānyucyante--sarvataḥ pañcaviṃśatitilasahitaṃ pañcaviṃśatyaṅgulamekaṃ karaṇaṃ pradhiṣu / trīṇi karaṇāni / pradhimadhyāścaturbhiḥ / tasya pārśve caturdaśāṅgulayaḥ saptasaptadaśa tilāś ca / pṛṣṭhaṃ pañcaviṃśatitilasahitaṃ pañcaviṃśatyaṅgulamukham / ekonatriṃśadaṅgulaṃ (pādonatriṃśaduṅgalaṃ) taṃ viṣkambhārdhapramāṇayā rajjvā karkaṭena vilikhya takṣayet /

maṇḍalāyāmupadhānakāle prayamaprastāre caturaśrasya sraktīḥ koṭīḥ avāntaradeśāna koṇadiśaḥ prati saṃyojayet /

dvitīye prastāre caturaśrasya madhyāni avāntaradeśān prati saṃyojeyat /
evaṃ bhedo na syāt /
bhedo nāma prastārānvayagatānāmiṣṭakānāṃ prānteṣu sāmyaṃ, tatsarvatra pariharaṇīyamiti tatra tatra vyākhyānavacanāt jñāyate /
vacanamapyasti sarvatra bhedānvarjayediti //

(vyatyāsaṃ cinuyādyāvataḥ prastārān cikīrṣet)

vyatyasya vyatyasyetyarthaḥ / prastārā iṣṭakāḥsaṃghātavi śeṣāḥ / te pañcacitīkaṃ cinvīteti vihitā yāvantaḥsyuḥ tāvanto vyātyasya vyatyasya cinuyāditi asmādevāvadhāraṇāt jñāyate, agnidharmā iṣṭakāyatanordhvapramāṇādayo'tra prāpnuvantīti prastāreṣu prathamatṛtoyapañcamāḥsamāḥ / dvitīyacaturthau samau nanu kathaṃ labhyate atiśayatṛtīyeneti / ucyate--saha śabda sāmarthyāccaturaśrasya maṇḍalakaraṇe atiśayatṛtīyasya karaṇīśeṣatvavidhānāccātiśayatṛtīyena saha viṣkambārdhena maṇḍalakaraṇam / etasyā eva gārhapatyaciteḥ caturaśramaṇḍalatayā prāpte kṣetrasya sāmyavabhimatamiti caturaśramaṇḍalakaraṇanyāyo'nusartavyaḥ / caturaśrapūrvakatvaṃ cāsya maṇḍalakaraṇasya dṛśyate / tato'pi sa evānusartavyaḥ /

kecittu saheti dvipadaṃ kṛtvā sārdhavyāyāmena sambandhayanti /
teṣāmanayoḥ padayoḥ prayojanaviśeṣānnaiva paśyāmaḥ /
tasmātsūktamatiśatṛtīyena saheti //

tripadaṃ piśīlaṃ, muṣṭīkṛtoratniḥ piśīlamityeke /

bāhvorantarālaṃ piśīlamiti bodhāyanaḥ /
dhiṣṇyā agnayaḥ "agnayo atha dhiṣṇiyāḥ' iti darśanāt, tacchabdena tadāyatanāni lakṣyante /
agnīnāmāyatanabhuvaḥ piśīlamātrāṇi bhavanti /
apavādābhāve ākārabhede'pi kṣetrasya sāmyaṃ bhavatyeva //

mudo dehān kṛtvā mṛtsambandhino dahānupacayān bimbāni kṛtyā āgnīdhrīyamekaṃ navadhā prāktvenodaktevana ca tridhā vyavalikhya madhyasthamekamekenāśmānā upadadhyāt / anyāṃstatpramāṇābiraṣṭakābiritarān hotrīyādīnāṃ mṛdo dehān yathā sahkhyaṃ yasyayasya dhiṣṇiyāgneḥ yāyā saṅkhyā dvādaśa ṣoḍaśa ekaviṃśatiṃ caturviṃśatimityādyā tayā saṃkhyayā taṃ taṃ vyavalikhya yathāyogaṃ yatrayatra deśe yāyā iṣṭakā yujyate tatratatra tāṃ tāṃ iṣṭakāmupadadhyāt / dvādaśa ṣoḍaśa ekaviṃśatiṃ caturviṃśatiṃ hotrīye, ekādaśa brāhnaṇācchaṃsīye, ṣaṭ mārjālīye, aṣṭāvaṣṭāvanyoṣu dhiṣṇiyeṣūpadadhātīti vijñāyate iti / anyadhiṣṇyāḥ praśāstrīyapotrīyaneṣṭīyācchāvākīyacātvālaśāmitrāvabhṛthāḥ / karaṇāni kṛtveṣṭakāḥ kuryāt / caturaśrapakṣe sarvataḥ prādeśāḥ hotrīyasya, dvādaśapakṣe prādeśe dve navāṅgule dve, ṣoḍaśapakṣe sarbato navakāni, ekaniṃśatipakṣe navake dve saptāṅgulayaḥ saptatilāś ca dve, tadekaṃ sarvataḥ saptatilāḥsaptāṅgulaya ekaṃ, atra caturaśramekataḥ pañcadhā vibhajya caturo bhāgān prathamena caturdhā vibhajet / dvitīyenaikaṃ pañcadhā / caturviṃśatipakṣe'yete eva karaṇe / tatra pūrvavat pañcadhā vibhajya caturo bhāgān saptatilasaptāṅgulena pañcadhā vibhajet / itareṇaikaṃ caturdhā / brāhnaṇācchaṃsīyasyāṣṭau hotrīye dvādaśyaḥ, tisra āgnīdhrīyāḥ, mārjālīyaḥsyaikataḥ prādeśāḥ, anyato'dhyardhāḥ ṣaṭ / anyeṣāṃ potrūyādīnāṃ āgnīdhrīyeṣṭakāḥ ṣaṇmārjālīye aṣṭake dve / maṇḍalapakṣe karaṇabāhulyaprasaṅgādyavalekhanamevocyate / āgnīdhrīyasya prākcodakca tredhā vibhāgaḥ / hotrūyasya dvādaśapakṣe ekatastridhā vibhāgo'nyataścaturdhā / ṣoḍaśapakṣe sarvataścaturdhā / ekaviṃśatipakṣe tvekataḥ pañcadhā kṛtvā caturo bhāgāṃścaturdhā vibhajya caturo bhāgān pañcadhā kṛtvānyaṃbhāgaṃ caturdhā vibhajet / ekādaśapakṣe tvekataśvaturdhā vibhajya trīna trodhā kṛtvā anyaṃ dvidhā vibhajet /

ṣaṭpakṣe tvekatastridhā kṛtvānyato dvidhā vibhajet /
aṣṭapakṣe caikatastridhā vibhajya dvau bhāgau tridhā kṛtvānyaṃ dvidhā kuryāt /
dhiṣṇyānāmekacitīkatvāt sukaratvā ccaiṣa eva prakāro varamityācāryo manyate /

vyāyāmamātre citye'gnau karaṇaṃ dāravaṃ bhavet /
laihe taccaturbhiḥsyāt phalakābhistaducyate //
dvātriṃśadaṅgulāyāmamaṅgulyaḥsyustrayodaśa /
caturviṃśatitila vistāraḥ karaṇe bhavet //
maṇḍalātmani tatra syātkaraṇaṃ ca caturvidham /
madhyamekaṃ pṛthau trīṇi tānyucyante yathākramam //
sapañcaviṃśatitilā aṅgulyaḥ pañcaviṃśatiḥ /
sarvataḥ karaṇaṃ tvekaṃ madhye'ne(te)neṣṭakākṛtiḥ //
pradhiṣu trīṇi tāni syuḥ pradhyante karaṇaṃ tribhiḥ /

kṛtvā viṣkambha turye syādubhayasyāpi lakṣaṇam //
tayorlakṣaṇayortekhāṃ rajjuṃ prāṅnipātayet /
lekhāyā dakṣiṇaṃ grāhyaṃ maṇḍalārthaṃ tyajedudak //
pariṇāhe caturthā ṣaṭsaṃbhugne bhugnalāñchane /
aṅkādaṅkagatā rekhā caturaśrasya sādhikā //
viṣkambhārdhīyavargasya dviguṇasyaiṣa mūlataḥ /
maṇḍale caturaśrasya karaṇī parikalpanā ( kalpitā) //
yadvā viṣkambhamūlārdha (vargārdha) mūlena karaṇīkṛtiḥ /
maṇḍale catuśrasya yāvatsaṃbhavajanmanaḥ //

caturaśrasya viṣkambhaṃ maṇḍalasya vadanti hi //
viṣkambhasyāntarā varge viṣkambhārdhasya vargataḥ /
śodhite pariśiṣṭasya mūlaṃ syāddalalakṣaṇam //
viṣkambhasyāddalagrastacāpajyārdhāsya vargake /
pūrvajyādalavarge tu viṣkambhārdhasya vargataḥ //
śodhite pariśiṣṭasya mūlaṃ taddhanuṣaḥśiraḥ /
sajyāvargaḥṣaḍguṇeṣu vargaśvāpasya vargakaḥ //
śarāhatastu kodaṇḍo dalito dhanuṣaḥ phalam //
viṣkambha ātmadviguṇena('pi)yojyaḥ sa cātmaviṃśena sa pañcamākhyām /
sapañcaviṃśena ca tau sametau vyāsena saiṣā pariṇāhallaptiḥ //
nemidvirekādaśavātrakāryas tadbhāga ekaś ca tathā dvidhā ca /
vyāsaḥsvarāṃśāḥ paridheḥsaha syur bhāgāṃśaturyeṇa sa saptamena //

deha--upacayaḥṣaḍuṅgalotsedhaḥ / saheti nipāto vākyālaṃ kāre / sa iti cchedaḥ / "ardhavyāyāmena maṇḍalaṃ parilikhet' ityeva satyāṣāḍhaḥ / caturaśraṃ saviśeṣeṇa viṣkambhārdhena catustilonenāṣṭaṣaṣṭyaṅgulenāvadadhyāt / caturaśraṃ navadhā kṛtvā prathikān tredhā vibhajhet / prathireva prathikaḥ / prathiśvakraparyantaḥ / athavā karaṇaireveṣṭakāḥ kuryāt / trīṇi karaṇāni--samacaturaśraṃ prathimadhyaṃ prathyantamiti / atra samacaturaśraṃ dvāviṃśatyaṅgulaṃ saikaviṃśatitilam / prathimadhyasya pārśvamānyāḥ pramāṇametadeva /

tiryaṅnānyā daśatilonatrayodaśāhgule ekaṃ pārśvaṃ phalakaṃ dhanurākāraṃ takṣet /
yathā aṅguliḥ dvādaśatilāś ca śarapramāṇaṃ bhavati /
prathyantaṃ tu pramāṇam /
tasyāpi caturaśravadekaṃ pārśvaṃ, trayodaśāṅgulaṃ daśatilonamaparaṃ, ṣaḍviṃśakaṃ tiladvayonamaparaṃ, taddhanuriva takṣet, yathā aṅguliḥ saptaviṃśatiś ca tilāḥśaro bhavati //

maṇḍalacaturaśrayoḥsādhāraṇamidaṃ bhedaparihārāya, anenaiva jñāyate sarvatra bhedo varjanīya iti / tathāca bodhāyanaḥ------

bhedān varjayedadharottarayoḥ pārśvasaṃdhānaṃ bheda ityācakṣate, tadādyānteṣu na vidyate--iti /

piśīla vijñāyate

viśīlaṃ pañcadhā varṇayanti--bāhvorantarālamityekam, kṛtamu ṣṭimaratniṃ(kṛtamuṣṭirara tniḥ) dvitīyam / akṛtamuṣṭimaratniṃ tṛtīyaṃ, dvātriṃśadaṅgulaṃ caturthaṃ, ṣaṭtriṃśadaṅgulaṃ pañcamamiti /

itarān dhiṣṇiyān yathāsaṃkhyaṃ vyavalikhya dvādaśa ṣoḍaśetyādi hotrīye, ekādaśa brāhnaṇācchaṃsīye, ṣaṇmārjālīye, aṣṭāvaṣṭāvanyoṣviti / teṣāṃ ca yathāsaṃbhavaṃ vibhāgā iti kecidāhuḥ / sama catuhaśrāṇāṃ dhiṣṇiyānāṃ samacaturaśrā eveṣṭakāḥ kāryāḥ caturaśramādeśādanyaditi / tavāratnīviṣkambhāṇāṃ dhiṣṇiyānā miṣṭakā aṣṭāṅgulā āgnīdhrīyasya / hotrīyasya dvādaśakasya madhye catasraścaturaṅgulāḥ / parito'ṣṭāṅgulāḥ / ṣoḍaśike ṣaḍaṅgulāḥsarvāḥ / ekaviṃśakasya madhye nava caturaṅgulāḥ, parito dvādaśa ṣaḍaṅgulā / caturviṃśakasya koṇe'pvaṣṭāṅgulāḥ, śeṣo viṃśatiścaturaṅgulāḥ / vlāhnaṇācchaṃsīye sapta ṣaḍaṅgulā, catasro navāṅgulāḥ / mārjālīye pañcāṣṭāṅgulāḥ / anye tvāhuḥ--yathāsaṃkhyamitarāniti vacanāt sarvā iṣṭakāstulyakṣetrā eva / tatra samacaturakṣāṇāmeva kartumaśakyatvāddīrghacaturaśrā api kriyeranniti / tanmate'pyāgnīdhrī yasya pūrvavat / hotrīyasya dvādaśakasyeṣṭakā aṣṭāṅgulāyāmāḥ ṣaḍaṅgulavyāsāḥ / ṣoḍaśakasya pūrvavadeva / ekaviṃśakasya tu aṣṭāṅgulāyāmā aratnisa(pta)mavyāsāḥ / (caturviṃśakasya ṣaḍaṅgulā yāmāścaturaṅgulavyāsāḥ / mārjālīyasya prādeśāyāmā aṣṭāṅgulir vyāsāḥ aṣṭakānāṃ prādeśāyāmāḥṣaḍaṅgulavyāsāḥ) / brāhnaṇācchaṃsīyasya dve saraṇe aṣṭāṅgulāyāmaṃ sāṣṭādaśatilaṣaḍaṅgulavyāsamekaṃ karaṇam /

tena tisra iṣṭakāḥṣaḍaṅgulavyāsā bhavanti /
navatilonanavāṅgulāyāmamaparam /
tena aṣṭāviṣṭakāḥ /
anyeṣu piśīlamātreṣvetadanusāreṇeṣṭakā draṣṭavyāḥ //

atha parimaṇḍalānāṃ ṣaṭtriṃśadaṅgulaviṣkambānāṃ āgnīdhrīyasya madhye prādeśavyāsaṃ parimaṇḍalamaśmānaṃ nidhāya parito'ṣṭāviṣṭakāstāsāṃ karaṇaṃ, pārśve dvādaśāṅgule, caturdaśāṅgulamaṣṭatilonamekaṃ tiryakphalakaṃ, taddhanuriva takṣet, yathā aṅguliḥ dvādaśatilāś ca śaro bhavati / saviṃśatitilaṃ caturaṅgulamanyattiryakphalakaṃ, tacca dhanuriva takṣet, antarvakraṃ tu bhavati yathā pañcadaśatilāḥśaraḥ / evamiṣṭakā anyeṣāṃ dhiṣṇiyānāṃ trīṇi karaṇāni / sarveṣāṃ ca dveṭve phalake aṣṭādaśāṅgule / hotrīyasya dvādaśakasya tṛtīyaṃ phalake navāṅgulaṃ saikādaśatilaṃ, taddhanuriva takṣet, yathaika viṃśatitilāḥśaraḥ evaṃ ṣoḍaśakādīnāṃ ca draṣṭavyam /

brāhnaṇācchaṃsīyasya tṛtīyaṃ phalakaṃ daśāṅgulaṃ sapañcadaśatilaṃ, taddhanurivatakṣeta, pañcaviṃśatitilāḥśāraḥ, saptatilamiti vkacit /
