The sixteen categories or predicaments; viz. pramāṇa, pramēya, saṃśaya, prayōjana, dṛṣṭānta, siddhānta, avayava, tarka, nirṇaya, vāda, jalpa, vitaṇḍā, hētvābhāsa, chala, jāti, nigrahasthāna. Some doctors contest this enumeration, allowing but seven. (See under padārtha.) Hence the terms ṣōḍaśapadārthavāda & -vādī & saptapadārthavāda & -vādī.
