Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 104.5

सर्वत्रौपेक्षो स्मृतिमां न च सो हिंसति कंचि लोके ।
तीर्णो श्रमणो अनाविलो उत्सन्नो यो न करोति आश्रवं ॥ ५ ॥

sarvatraupekṣo smṛtimāṃ na ca so hiṃsati kaṃci loke |
tīrṇo śramaṇo anāvilo utsanno yo na karoti āśravaṃ || 5 ||

Ever patient and mindful, he harms no one in the world; he is an immaculate recluse who has crossed the stream. He does not, puffed up with pride, contract any ashrava. (5)
