This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 78.31

यो विचरे गिरिवरेषु वनेषु प्रवरेषु फुल्लशिखरेषु ।
स खु मरिष्यति नागो मम चोपवनं च शोचन्तो ॥ ३१ ॥

yo vicare girivareṣu vaneṣu pravareṣu phullaśikhareṣu |
sa khu mariṣyati nāgo mama copavanaṃ ca śocanto || 31 ||

“For that elephant who wandered o’er the hills and through the leafy forest glades, will surely die through grief for me and his native glen.” (31)
