Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 67.98

किं दानि अहं करोमि कस्य वा गरहाम्य् अहं ।
उत्त्रासयति मान् दृष्ट्वा मृगी भ्रान्ता व लुब्धकं ॥ ९८ ॥

kiṃ dāni ahaṃ karomi kasya vā garahāmy ahaṃ |
uttrāsayati mān dṛṣṭvā mṛgī bhrāntā va lubdhakaṃ || 98 ||

“What am I to do, or why should I be blamed? I fear him when he looks at me, as a straying deer fears the huntsman. (98)
