Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 35.51

प्रतिबुद्धं च कुमारं प्रवेणियं अष्टमंगलकृतायं ।
उपनामयि मातुस्मा घनविवरकृतं च आदित्यं ॥ ५१ ॥

pratibuddhaṃ ca kumāraṃ praveṇiyaṃ aṣṭamaṃgalakṛtāyaṃ |
upanāmayi mātusmā ghanavivarakṛtaṃ ca ādityaṃ || 51 ||

And when the child was awake, he took him from his mother and presented him with his hair in eight braids, like the sun emerging through a rift in the clouds. (51)
