This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 3.4

अपरा प्रेती गाथां भाषे ।
नदीम् उपेन्ति तृषिता सिकता परिवर्तति ।
छायाम् उपेन्ति सन्तप्ता आतपो परिवर्तति ॥ ४ ॥

aparā pretī gāthāṃ bhāṣe |
nadīm upenti tṛṣitā sikatā parivartati |
chāyām upenti santaptā ātapo parivartati || 4 ||

Another female ghost recites a verse: Thirsty they run to a stream, but its channel is empty. Scorched, they run to the shade, but when they come there they find blazing sunshine. (4)
