उवाच तत्रैव विधिं हरिः स्वयं
यथेप्सितं त्वं वद विप्र दक्षिणाम्
तदा हरिं प्राह विधिः प्रभो मे
देहि त्वद्-अङ्घ्र्योर् निज-भक्ति-दक्षिणम्
uvāca tatraiva vidhiṃ hariḥ svayaṃ
yathepsitaṃ tvaṃ vada vipra dakṣiṇām
tadā hariṃ prāha vidhiḥ prabho me
dehi tvad-aṅghryor nija-bhakti-dakṣiṇam
uvāca—said; tatra—there; eva—indeed; vidhim—to Brahmā; hariḥ—Lord Hari; svayam—personally; yathā—as; ipsitam—desired; tvam—you; vada—say; vipra—O brāhmaṇa; dakṣiṇām—reward; tadā—then; harim—to Lord Hari; prāha—said; vidhiḥ—Brahmā; prabhaḥ—O Lord; me—to me; dehi—please give; tvad-aṅghryoḥ—for Your feet; nija—own; bhakti—devotion; dakṣiṇām—reward.
English translation of verse 1.16.38:
When Lord Hari said to Brahmā, "Please ask whatever you wish as dakṣiṇā,"
Brahmā replied to Lord Hari, "O Lord, as dakṣiṇā please give me devotion for Your feet."
