The Sanskrit edition of the Apastamba Sulba-sutra with the commentaries of Kapardin, Karavinda and Sundararaja. The Sulbasutras are considered Vedic appendices and deals with the ancient Indian science of Mathematics and Geometry, by instructing the construction of fire-altars, among others. Sutra 21.10

tatra puruṣābhyāso nāratniprādeśānāṃ saṅkhyāsaṃyogāt saṅkhyāsaṃyogāt || ĀpŚus_21.10 ||

samāptaḥ śulbapraśnaḥ

tatra puruṣābhyāsaḥ nāratniprādeśānāṃ / kutaḥ? saṃkhyāsaṃyogāt -- ekaviṃśa iti / na saptavidha ityatrāpi saṃkhyā vidhīyate / vākyāntareṇa tatra aratniprādeśā niviśante / na tatra saptasaṃkhyāyāṃ niviśante / tasmātsaṃkhyāsaṃyogāt puruṣābhyāsa eva nāratniprādeśānām / tatra śloko bhavati ----

trividhena naraṃ proktaṃ tristāvati vibhāva (soḥ)sau /
eka (viṃśe) vidhe tatau nyūnaṃ tilānāṃ caiva sapta (bhiḥ)tiḥ //

a(ya)tho -- khyātam

śyenacitamiti vihitaṃ yatprakāraṃ yāvaccāsyāmnānasārūpyaṃ mānavihitaṃ śyenasārūpyaṃ tatsarvaṃ vyākhyātam /
tatra vakrapakṣādiguṇairāmnātena yacchayenasya sārūpyamuktaṃ; śyenāgagnerardhadaśamā aratnaya ityādinā cayanaprakāra uktaḥ, tena uktau kaṅkālajau syātāmityarthaḥ //

trisyā -- ṣāt

āśvamedhikāgnestristāvavidhau sāratniprādeśābhyāsaḥ na puruṣamātrasya; viśeṣābhāvāt /
aviśeṣeṇa prākṛtāgnijñatraiguṇyavidhānādityarthaḥ //

dīrgha ---- ktaḥ

dīrghacaturaśrāṇāṃ samāsa ityuktam /
evaṃ dve dīrghacaturaśre samasyete; tannimitto nirhrāso vivṛddhirveti /
yāvadicchan dīrghacaturaśrāṇi samasyoditi /
tena tristāve'gnau prathamaviharaṇena samāsa uktaḥ //

eka -- gāt

aśvamedhe ekaviṃśāgniśrutau puruṣāṇāmevābhyāsaḥ nāratniprādeśānām / "saptavidho vāva prākṛto'gniriti' saptasaṃkhyā pṛthaksaṃniveśanī / samānajātīyeṣu puruṣeṣveva saṃyuktaḥ nāratnayādiṣu / aratniprādeśāstvaratninā dakṣiṇata iti vākyena svarūpamātreṇa vihitā nārdhasaṃkhyayā / ataḥ prakṛtau puruṣāṇāmeva saṃkhyā saṃyogādaśvamedhe'pyekaviṃśāgnau puruṣāṇāmeva saṃkhyāsaṃyogo yukta iti aratniprādeśāstvanabhyastā bhaveyuḥ /

puruṣābyāsādanantaramaratninā dakṣiṇata iti kuryādityarthaḥ /
etaduktaṃ bhavati -- tristāve ekaviṃśaprastāradvayavidhestristāva ekaviṃśa evāgniḥ brāhnaṇadarśanāt /
dvādaśa daśa syāt /
dviruktiḥ prasnaparisamāptidyotanārthā //

sundararājīyā vyākhyā

nanu siraso'bhāve śyenākṛterapūrvatvāt śyenacitaṃ cinvīteti vidhivākyenaiva virodhaprasaṅgaḥ; tatrāha ------

a(ya)tho -- khyātam

yadetacchayenacitaṃ cinvītoti; yattena yāvadāmānātam vakrapakṣo vyastapucchaḥ iti vihitasārūpyamuktaṃ; anyathā pakṣapucchavikāravidherānarthakyaprasaṅgāditi bhāvaḥ / asmin pakṣe iṣṭakānāṃ karaṇāni dvipūruṣayā rajjvā pakṣasaṃnamane puruṣasya caturthāyāmaṃ pañcamavyāsaṃ yathāyoganataṃ tat prathamaṃ; tasyakaisarṇo'ṣṭādaśāṅgulaḥ sapādaikapañcadaśāṅgulo'nyaḥ / dve dve pūrvavatsaṃhite tat dvitīyam / prathama pañcame karaṇe saṃhite tṛtīyam; caturthapañcamaṣaṣṭhāni pūrvaśyenacidvadeva / pucche yāḥ ṣaṣṭhīcaturthyaḥ upadheyāstāsāmanye karaṇe / tatra caturthyāṃ pārśve pūrvavadeva ekā tiryaṅbānī trayastriṃśadaṅgulā anyā sārdhacatuśvatvāriṃśadaṅgulā ṣaṣṭhayāstu pañcadaśamekaṃ phalakaṃ / trayastriṃśadaṅgulaṃ dvitīyaṃ ṣaṭtriṃśakaṃ sāṣṭatilaṃ tṛtīyam / saptamasya tiryaṅbhānyāvaratnimātrau / pārśvena (nava) viṃśatyaṅgule / karṇaśvaikaḥ / (anyaḥ karṇaḥ pañcacatvāriṃśadaṅgulaḥ ekādaśatilonaḥ / aṣṭaprasya navaviṃśake pārśve / dvādaśikāṣaṭtriṃśike tiraśvayau śiraso'bhāvānnavamaṃ karaṇaṃ na bhavati / aratniprādeśābhāve puccheṣṭakāḥ pūrvaśyenavadeva) / pakṣasthānāñca tadanuguṇaṃ namanam / upadhāne ca pakṣayoḥ prathamā aśītirudīcyaḥ pucchaṃ pūrvaśyenavadeva / pucchāpyayasthacaturthyoraṣṭādaśāṅgulam / pucche pūrvaśyenavadeva / pucche pañcadaśāṅgulamātmani / ātmanyudīcyo nava rītayaḥ / udīcībhiriṣṭakābhiḥ / tāsāṃ madhyamāḥ sapta / aṣṭābhiḥ caturthībhiḥ caturtharītyāṃ dakṣiṇarītau tataḥ ṣaṣṭayaścatasraḥ dve caturthyau / evameva ṣaṣṭhī rītiḥ / śroṇyaṃseṣu catasraścatasraḥ ṣaṣṭhayaḥ / śeṣe ṣaṭ pañcamyaḥ / eṣa dviśataḥ prastāraḥ / (tatrāśiraskasya śyenacitaḥ pakṣayoḥ prathameṣṭakā udīcyo rītayaḥ / triṃśattriṃśat / pucche tu pūrvavat / ātmanyudīcyo rītyo nava syuḥ / tatrādyarītigā ādyāsvatasraḥ ṣaṣṭhayṛḥ syureva / evamantyā piṣṭakāḥ / dakṣiṇottarata ekaikā pañcamīṣṭakā / pucchāpyayasthe tanmadhye ukte / evaṃ daśeṣṭakāḥ antyā api rītaya evaṃ syuḥ / pañcamyaḥ madhyato'dhike / turayirītyāṃ caturthyau / dve catasraḥ ṣaṣṭhikāḥ / tataścaturthyau pūrvavat ṣaṣṭhayaḥ / catuthyau dve doṣṭakāḥ? evaṃ śeṣamagniṃ caturthībhiḥ pūrayet / evaṃ navatirātmasthāḥ prāstāre dviśateṣṭakāḥ) / aparasmiṃścatasraścatasraḥ nirnāmayordvitīyāḥ / apyayayoś ca tṛtīyāḥ / pakṣayoḥ śeṣe ṣaṭpañcāśat prathamāḥ prācyaḥ pucche pūrvavat / saptamyo'ṣṭamyaś ca ātmani nava rītyaḥ / prācyaḥ prācībhiriṣṭakābhiḥ / tatra pakṣāpyayasthānāṃ paścātpurastācca pañcapañcamyaḥ ṣaṭca ṣaṣṭhayaḥ / dakṣiṇottararītimadhye (saptarītyaḥ pūrvaprastāravat / dvitīyaṣaṣṭhayo (dvitīyāṣṭamyo) rītyormadhye) ṣoḍaśaṣoḍaśa ṣaṣṭhayaḥ / ( dakṣiṇottare rītimadhye pūrvaprastāravat / dvitīyāṣṭamyo rītyormadhyeṣoḍaśaṣoḍaśa ṣaṣṭhayaḥ / evaṃ dviśataḥ prastāraḥ / tatrāparasmin prastāre pakṣe dvitīyāḥ / pakṣamadhyataḥ dvitīyāḥ / apyaye śeṣe prathamāḥ /

evamuttarapakṣe prācyaḥ /
imāḥ sarvā dvisaptatiḥ /
athātmani prācyo nava rītyasyuḥ /
ādyāyāṃ pañcamīdvitīyam //

ādityapakṣāpyayagā dve ṣaṣṭhayau pañcamī tathā /
pañcamyekāntyarītyāto dve ṣaṣṭhayāvapyayaḥ puraḥ //

ṣaṣṭayāvekā pañcamī syāddvitīyasyāmathāvalau /
madhye ṣoḍaśa ṣaṣṭhayaḥ syurevamaṣṭamarītigāḥ //

caturthaṣaṣṭharītyau tu prathamottaravattathā /
ātmaśeṣaṃ caturthībhiḥ ...... pucchagocarāḥ //

saptamyo dvādaśāṣṭamyastrayodaśa ca pūrvavat /
evaṃ dvitīyaprastāro dvitīye'ṣṭaka iṣyate //)

kecitttu -- yathā prakṛtyeti vacanādiṣṭakā api / (ātmani prakṛtivadevetyāhuḥ / tathā prathamakaraṇasya pārśve catvāriṃśadaṅgule / aratnī eva (tiraśvayau) tiryaṅbhānyau (ekaḥ karṇaḥ pañcaviṃśatikaḥsaptadaśatilaḥ / anyastilatrayonaikaṣaṣṭhayaṅgulaḥ) / dve sahite dvitīyaṃ (karaṇyā aratni) prathamasyāratniprādeśena yathāyoganatena vardhayet / tṛtīyaṃ pucchānnavamacaturthaṣaṣṭhasaptamāṣṭamāni pūrvavatprakṛtivadātmana iṣṭakāḥ pañcamabāgīyāḥ / tatra prādeśāḥ ṣaḍaṅgulavyāsāḥ kāryāḥ / ātmāni dakṣiṇata uttaraś ca daśā (dhyardhārḥ) dhyā udagāyatāḥ / ātmaśeṣe pañcamya udīcyo daśa rītayaḥ / madhye dve uddhṛtyāṣṭādaśāṅgule pucchāpyaye dve caturthyau ātmānamaratninā veti dve abhitaścatasraḥ ṣaḍaṅgulavyāsāḥ / pucchā pyayasthayoḥ paścātpañcārdhyāḥ prācyaḥ / puccha(viśeṣāḥ) śeṣaṃ pūrvavat / (pakṣayostriṃśattriṃśat prathamā utīcyaḥ / eṣa dviśataḥ prastāraḥ / aparasmiṃstu tisrastisro nirṇāmayoḥ / dvitīyāḥ pakṣaśeṣe dvicatvāriṃśatprathamāḥ prācyaḥ / pucchapūrvavat) / ātmanyudīcyo nava rītayaḥ / ā (tāsāmā) dyantāḥ (rītiḥ prācībhirardhyābhiḥ / antyāḥ pañcamībhiḥ madhyamarītīnāṃ pañcānāmādyāḥ anyāśvārdhyāḥ) śvatāḥ prācyaḥ dvitīyasya ātyāmuddhṛtya tatrāṣṭau ṣaḍaṅgulavyāsāḥ upadadhyāt tatra pasvātpurastācca dve dve udagāyate / madhye catasraḥ prāgāyatāḥ / aṣṭamarītyā ādyante(ntye) dvitīyāmantyāṃ coddhṛtya navanavāṣṭāṅgulayaḥ dviśataḥ prastāraḥ / yadā tu samacaturaśrābhirupadhīyante tadāpyevameva pakṣau / pucchaṃ tu pūrvavadeva / pakṣāpyaye dve aṇūke ātmānaṃ prādeśena prāpte'bhito dve dve ṣaḍaṅgule etāḥ ṣaḍdaśabhiḥ prādeśaiḥ parigṛhṇīyāt / ātmaśeṣe aratnayaḥ / dviśataḥ prastāraḥ / aparasmiṃstu sandhyanatarāle pañcacatvāriṃśadaratnayaḥ / śroṇyaṃseṣu dvādaśadvādaśa (aṇūkāḥpādāḥ) / (pādye) śeṣe viṃśatiraṇūkāḥ / ātma(madhya) gatamuddhṛtya navāṣṭāṅgulāḥ / (dviśataḥ prastāraḥ) yadā tu ṣaṣṭhaśatāṅgulayā rajjvā pakṣayornamanaṃ tadā puruṣasya pañcamāyāmaṃ ṣaṣṭhavyāsamekaṃ prathamaṃ karaṇam / yathāyoganataṃ tatkarṇastrayoviṃśatyaṅgulaḥsaikaviṃśatitilaḥ / anyaḥ saptatriṃśaḥ saikādaśatilaḥ / viṃśatyaṅgulāyāmaṃ trayodaśatilayuktaṃ caturdaśāṅgulavyāsaṃ prāñcaṃ caturaśraṃ bhūmau likhitvā ṣoḍaśāṅgulayā rajjvobhayataḥ pāśayā taṃ pakṣavat saṃnamayet / taddva (ttṛtīyaṃ) devaprathamasya ṣaḍbāgamaṣṭabhāgena vardhayet / yathāyoganatena ta (tatra)t tṛtīyaṃ / anyāni pūrvavat / upadhāne prathame prastāre nirnāmayoḥ ṣaṭ ṣaṭ dvitīyāḥ / pakṣaśeṣe prathamā dvāsaptatirudīcyaḥ / pucchamātmā ca pūrvavat / śroṇyaṃseṣu dve dve ṣaṣṭhayau / dviśataḥ prastāraḥ / apasmiṃstu pakṣayoḥ saptatiḥ prathamāḥ / prācyaḥ pañcapañcāpyayayoḥ /

tṛtīyāḥ pucchātmanoḥ pūrvavat /
ātmani tu ṣoḍaśa ṣaṣṭhīruddhṛtyāṣṭau pañcamīḥ kṣipet /
dviśataḥ prastāraḥ /
ātmanaḥ prakṛtivadiṣṭakā iti pakṣe'pi tadanuguṇā iṣṭakā draṣṭavyā //

tri -- yate

"dvistāvātristāvā vediḥ' ityatra liṅgasyāvivakṣitatvāda gneś ca vedeś ca vivakṣi (vihi) tatvātsamāsāntaḥ /

prākṛtasyaivāgneḥ saptavidhasyaivātra triguṇatvam /
na tvanantara (guṇasya) kṛtasyābhyāsasya sarvābhyāso viśeṣo'taḥsarvasya sāratniprādeśasyaivābhyāsaḥ; tristāvasya vidhau vidhābhyāsavat puruṣāṇāmiti viśeṣāśravaṇāt /
evamardhatrayoviṃśāḥ puruṣā agnirbhavati /
puruṣasya trikaraṇo veṇuḥsapañcatilonāṣṭādaśatadvayāṅgulayaḥ puruṣasthānīyāḥ //

dīrghacatu -- uktaḥ

tulyayoś caturaśrayor ity atraiva prakāra uktaḥ /
tiryaṅbhānīpārśvamānyoś ca trikaraṇīpārśvamānī ca //

ekaviṃ ---- yate

śākhāntare "ekaviṃśatiḥ puruṣaḥ parimāṇa' ityekaviṃśaḥ satomor'dhavidhaṃ pañcāśadadhyardhāḥ ityatropadheyaḥ /
prāyikatvādastome'pi //

tatra asaṃyogāt

saṃkhyā hi tulyajātīyasya saṃkhyāntarasyaiva nivartikā; yathā vidhābhyāseṣviti bhāvaḥ / asmin pakṣe ardhadvāviṃśāḥ puruṣāstatra dve śate tisraśvāṅgulayaḥ ṣaṭtilāḥ puruṣasthānīyo veṇuḥ / tasya caturthapañcamaṣaṣṭhadaśamā aṇūkāratnyūrvasthiprādeśā avagantavyāḥ / aratniprādeśābhāve'pi pakṣadvaye'pyekaviṃśatireva puruṣāḥ / śrīmadrāmāyaṇe tvaṣṭādaśapuruṣatvamasvamedhāgnerdṛśyate ----

sa cityo rājasiṃhasya sañcitaḥ kuśalairdvijaiḥ /
gārūḍo rukmapakṣo vai triguṇo'ṣṭādaśātmakaḥ //

iti / sa tu śākhāntare (ṇa) ṣaḍvidhasyāpi kṛtitvadarśanāt / tristāvo'vagantavyaḥ / uktaṃ hi ṣaḍvidhasyāpi prakṛtitvaṃ bodhā yanena -- "ṣaḍvidhaṃ saptavidhaṃ dvādaśavidhaṃ yāvadvidhaṃ ceṣyamāṇo bhavati' iti / atra trayodaśavidhāntānagnīn citvāśvamedhamārabhate / sa tataḥ paramagniṃ cinvāno dvāviṃśatyādividhameva cinvīta / na tu pūrvavidham / na jyāyāsaṃ citvā kanīyāsaṃ cinvīta' iti /

atha yo dvāviṃśatividhādūrdhvamapi vidhāmabhyasya tataḥ paramaśvamedhamārabhate yathā triṃśadvidhānte; tasyāpyaśvamedhāgnistristāvaka ekaviṃśo tasya prakārāntarābhāvāt /
tataḥ paraṃ tu pūrvakṛtādārabhyaikattriṃśadvidhādikam eva cinvīta /
pūrveṣāṃ kṛtatvāt; vyañjitaṃ caitatsarvaṃ bodhāyanena -- "aśvamedhaḥ prāptaśvedāharedata ūrdhvāṃ vidhāmabyasyennetarānādriyeta /
atītaṃ cedāharedāhṛtya kṛtānte prakṛtyādadīta' iti //

iti śrī sundararājīye śulbapradīpe ṣaṣṭhaḥ paṭalaḥ

iti sundararājīyaṃ saṃpūrṇaṃ samāptaḥ savyākhya āpastambīyaśulbapraśnaḥ
