by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 103.6

साक्षं दृष्टो महावीरो मृगदावान्तराश्रितो ।
धर्मश्रेष्ठं प्रकाशेन्तो सिंहो व गिरिकन्दरे ॥ ६ ॥

sākṣaṃ dṛṣṭo mahāvīro mṛgadāvāntarāśrito |
dharmaśreṣṭhaṃ prakāśento siṃho va girikandare || 6 ||

Here you have beholden face to face the Great Hero who abides in the Deer Park, like a lion in a mountain cave, proclaiming the best of dharmas. (6)
