This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 72.9

न पण्डिता प्रशंसन्ति दानं विगर्हितं सदा ।
एतेन अतिदानेन राज्यातो सि प्रवासितो ॥ ९ ॥

na paṇḍitā praśaṃsanti dānaṃ vigarhitaṃ sadā |
etena atidānena rājyāto si pravāsito || 9 ||

“Wise men do not commend charity, but always censure it. For this excessive charity of yours you have been banished from your kingdom. (9)
