Text 10.218 [Smaraṇa]

53. Smaraṇa

यथानुभवम् अर्थस्य दृष्टे तत्-सदृशे स्मृतिः । स्मरणम् ॥ १०.१३२abc ॥

yathānubhavam arthasya dṛṣṭe tat-sadṛśe smṛtiḥ | smaraṇam || 10.132abc ||

yathā-anubhavam—in accordance with the experience (lit. “without going beyond a normal experience,” i.e. no imagination is involved); arthasya—of a thing; dṛṣṭe—is seen; tat-sadṛśe—when what is similar to that; smṛtiḥ—the remembrance; smaraṇam—the ornament called smaraṇa.

When there is a remembrance of a thing by seeing something similar to it in such a way that it is a normal experience, that is smaraṇa (remembrance).

sadṛśa-vastu-darśanena pūrvānubhūtasya tathaiva pratisandhānaṃ smaraṇam.

Smaraṇa is the recollection, by seeing a similar thing, of a previously experienced thing in the same way it was.
